WHAT TO EXPECT THROUGHOUT YOUR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

A step-by-step guide.

PRE-TREATMENT

1

The first thing we do is take a series of DIAGNOSTIC PHOTOGRAPHS AND A SHORT VIDEO of the face, profile, and teeth.

*Please read through our Treatment Policies and Procedures.

2

We then take 3 TYPES OF DIGITAL X-RAYS. If you can provide us with the appropriate X-rays that are less than 6 months old, we will not charge you for our X-rays.

3

The ORTHODONTIST evaluates your records and in about 1-2 weeks a detailed report will be sent to you explaining the problem and the proposed treatment.

The advantage of this approach is that you have time to familiarise yourself with the information that the orthodontist provides and then if you have questions you can email these to Dr Hugo or Dr Taunyane.

4

Please send your quote to your MEDICAL AID FOR PRIOR AUTHORISATION. If you don’t have medical aid, you will be required to pay for the consultation at your first appointment.

5

You can now make your FIRST APPOINTMENT. Please note: in some cases it is necessary to wait until all permanent teeth have erupted. The patient will be recalled and evaluated at 6-12 monthly intervals to determine the best time to start orthodontic treatment.

ACTIVE TREATMENT

6

APPLY BRACES - Direct bonding is the most common technique and you may book the first avaliable Apply Braces appointment after your medical aid has authorised your treatment.

7

After each appointment, you will receive an email with all the information about your progress. Access your PATIENT PORTAL anytime to stay connected throughout your treatment.

8

You’ll be asked to attend ROUTINE CHECKUPS every 8-12 weeks.

Post-Treatment

9

Once the orthodontist is satisfied with your treatment, YOUR BRACES WILL BE REMOVED.

10

ANOTHER IMPRESSION will be taken.

11

Using the new impression, upper and lower RETAINERS will be made. In patients whose lower teeth were very skew, a fixed wire splint will also be placed behind the lower teeth.

12

FINAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND X-RAYS will be taken at the first post-treatment check, which is usually scheduled for 2-8 weeks after the braces are removed.

13

You will be MONITORED IN RETENTION as follows:

6 months after brace removal and thereafter, 6-12 monthly intervals until the end of growth. For the rest of your life you need to wear retainers as necessary to prevent the teeth from going skew in which case the retainers will become tighter fitting.

If you have had the first stage of treatment, you will be seen every 4-6 months until you are ready for the next stage.

If you need to have jaw surgery at the end of growth, braces will be replaced in preparation for the jaw op.

Please note: It is very important to bring your retainers to each visit.
