Bite Discrepancy
Sometimes a patient has a habitual bite position which masks the true nature of the patient’s problem. If such a discrepancy becomes evident during orthodontic treatment, the quoted orthodontic fee will not be changed but the treatment will become more complicated and may take longer. It may even be necessary for the orthodontist to recommend jaw surgery to achieve the ideal result.
Cement Bite Opening/Bite Ramps
The cement bite opening on the back teeth, or bite ramps on the front teeth, is to prevent the teeth from getting damaged when biting on the braces.
We intentionally use cement which is softer than the enamel because if we use harder bite opening, the teeth get damaged instead of the cement just breaking or the composite wearing. Many people stop grinding or clenching when they get braces because the sensation is altered and that often disrupts the habit. It's ok if one side breaks off. With the cement bite opening or bite ramp only touching on one side, it is more uncomfortable to grind or clench, so it is more effective at preventing damage. If it is too uncomfortable please make a "breakage" appointment. There is no charge for such a ‘breakage appointment, unless a bracket or archwire is broken.
